Heritage volunteering is an important arm of the Arts Society and it is where our members undertake to support other outside activities with their specialist skills. These skills are may be gained whilst carrying out the project. When setting up a project it is always a proviso that the Arts Society is acknowledged and that the work is in an area accessed by visitors.

West Horsley Place

The books left by the Duchess of Roxburgh were in a variety of places and condition due to the state of the property. The Arts Societies in East Surrey have commissioned a specialist to guide them in the correct way to collate and document the condition of the books. It is a very specialist training and is under the watchful eye of Caroline Bendix .At present Bookham Arts Society has four volunteers working at the house. Visitors to the property will see the work in process on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Polesden Lacey

The volunteers at Polesden have created the beautiful Tea dress as worn by Mrs Greville in her day. The dress is made in silk and hand embroidered. I do hope that all our members have seen this garment. We are also  aware that many of our members are volunteers in the house or garden.

Guildford Cathedral

We have had four members carrying out restoration work on the vestments at the Cathedral as well as the frontals. Once again training has been given in order to take the work forward. We work alongside members of West Surrey societies . The Consecration Cope as shown in the photograph has taken nearly five years to complete at some considerable cost. The fabric was weak as indicated in the first picture and the repairs were unsightly. The embroidery on the blue band was in a poor state and we were advised by a graduate of The Royal School of Needlework that it would be advisable to lift the embroidery free of the backing before remounting it on new silk damask (£168 per metre)  The large photo shows the completed cope in excellent repair. A real labour of love. There is still much to be attended to . Do pay a visit to the Cathedral to see the interesting vestments, we are in The Chapter House on alternate Wednesdays.
