Cartoons and Contraptions-the Wonderful World of W.Heath Robinson
Barry Venning

Barry is an art historian whose interests range from the art of late medieval Europe to global contemporary art. He has published books, Turner

and European Landscapes and also has researched interests in British visual satire.

For over a century W. Heath Robinson has been famous for drawing rickety, complicated devices. He became so famous that in 1943 Bletchley

Park named one of their code breaking machines after him. But Robinson was also a fine painter and satirist whose gentle fun in cartoons is

still laughed at out loud.

Minature Portraits: Tiny Treasures Close to our Hearts
Cindy Polemis

Cindy is an art historian and independent lecturer and studied as a mature student for a Masters in History of Art at Birkbeck. Before that she

worked on the BBC radio World Service in current affairs. She is latterly an art guide at the Tate and Tate Modern. She is particularly keen to

draw parallels with art and social history.

This lecture centres on miniature portraits which were given as diplomatic gifts etc. and tokens of love between 16C-19CV commissioned as

small pictures which could be held in the hand or placed inside lockets and Cindy looks at the history of these tiny treasures of art.
